Don Argus has been Chairman of BHP Billiton – the world’s largest diversified resource group and Australia’s most important company – since 1999. When Don assumed the role as Chairman the market capitalisation was A$17.28 billion. Today it has a combined market capitalisation of A$235 billion.
A Queenslander first, Don has extended the global reach of all the companies with which he has been associated.
Don was the former CEO and Managing Director of the National Australia Bank between 1990 and 1999. In that period its market capitalisation grew from A$5.5 billion to a peak of A$37 billion. EPS growth in that period grew at an extraordinary rate of 128%.
Don retired as Chairman of Brambles Industries in January 2008 and apart from BHP Billiton he is a Director of Australian Foundation Investment Company Limited.
His CV records involvement in Government reviews, industry groups, and he sits on the International Advisory Councils of the New York Stock Exchange and Allianz Insurance. He is a co-Patron of Vision Australia Foundation.
In 1998 Don was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his services to banking and finance, and his contributions to community and sporting organisations. He was further awarded the Centenary Medal in April 2003 for service to Australian society through business.
Don is a Senior Fellow (SF) of Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia) and a Fellow of Certified Practising Accountants Australia (CPA). He is an Alumnus of the Harvard University Advanced Management Programme, and has been awarded honorary degrees from Monash University (Doctor of Laws) and Griffith University (Doctor of the University).
