In recognition of his major contributions to civil infrastructure and mining services in Queensland as well as to philanthropy and the community.

Cyril Golding, otherwise known as Mr Gladstone, as was his father, was born in 1920 and raised in Gladstone. His great grandfather was a pioneer of the City.

Born with a number of life threatening medical conditions which required regular hospitalisations, Cyril was unable to compete in sports, missed much school time and was unsuccessful academically. He left school at 13 to take up a labouring job.

Quickly realising that this had no future, and, knowing that his father, grandfather and great grandfather had all been successful, he sought to improve his education by attending high school.

Later, while working in a sawmill, Cyril boldly entered his first business by operating a truck for its owner in return for a 50 percent share of the income. In 1942, Cyril formed Golding Contractors Pty Ltd, known simply as Golding, which grew into one of the largest privately owned civil infrastructure and mining services companies in Queensland. Golding also owned and maintained one of Queensland’s largest fleets of heavy earthmoving and mining equipment.

Major projects to which Golding has contributed include: the Queensland Alumina Refinery, Gladstone; Yarwun Alumina Refinery, Gladstone; Boyne Smelter, Gladstone; Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal; Port of Airlie Marina and Resort; Harbour Town, Gold Coast; Sovereign Island, Gold Coast; Neweipa Wharf, Cape York; Kogan Creek Power station; Kogan Creek Mine; Ensham Mine; Phosphate Hill Mine; and significant civil and mining works on BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) mine sites throughout the Bowen Basin.

When, at 87, and from humble beginnings, Cyril sold the business to a private equity firm in 2008, it employed 1000 staff plus contractors throughout Australia, turning over approximately 350 million dollars annually.

Cyril has been an outstanding contributor to philanthropy and the community and enjoys widespread respect as a humble, values driven, business leader. Throughout his business life he has placed the highest value on maintaining a spotless reputation for himself and the company.
